Students rotated through four engaging stations inspired by the novel, allowing them to make deeper connections to the story, characters, themes, and culture they explored throughout the unit. Wtih hands-on activities, each station brought the book to life in a meaningful and memorable way.

What I remember most about Blackman Elementary when it first opened 25 years ago was the excitement of starting something completely new. I was teaching kindergarten, and staff members came together from several different schools to open Blackman. We were building not only a new school, but also a new school community. There was a strong sense of teamwork as everyone worked together to establish routines, create a positive culture, and start new traditions.

One of my favorites is our yearly High School Homecoming Parade. I love seeing the marching band, cheerleaders, and football players as they make their way through the school parking lot. It is especially meaningful to see so many former elementary students return and celebrate the school. Watching them grow and succeed reminds me of the lasting impact and strong sense of community that makes Blackman Elementary such a special place.

It has always felt like a second home, where I built lasting relationships, created many memories, and had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students every day.
💡 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲?
Give yourself grace. No one becomes an expert in a new school or curriculum overnight. Focus first on building relationships with students, families, and other teachers. The rest will come. Don't be afraid to ask questions, don't try to do everything at once, and take care of yourself!

What I remember most about Blackman Elementary when it first opened 25 years ago was the excitement of starting something completely new. I was teaching kindergarten, and staff members came together from several different schools to open Blackman. We were building not only a new school, but also a new school community. There was a strong sense of teamwork as everyone worked together to establish routines, create a positive culture, and start new traditions.

One of my favorites is our yearly High School Homecoming Parade. I love seeing the marching band, cheerleaders, and football players as they make their way through the school parking lot. It is especially meaningful to see so many former elementary students return and celebrate the school. Watching them grow and succeed reminds me of the lasting impact and strong sense of community that makes Blackman Elementary such a special place.

It has always felt like a second home, where I built lasting relationships, created many memories, and had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students every day.

Give yourself grace. No one becomes an expert in a new school or curriculum overnight. Focus first on building relationships with students, families, and other teachers. The rest will come. Don't be afraid to ask questions, don't try to do everything at once, and take care of yourself!

The excitement and planning that went into our Spring Fling carnival and seeing so many parents and students come out to support the school. It took a lot of work, but it was always a successful event.

I was a part of the opening and contributed to the success we have had. The friendships, laughter, and countless lives touched over the years have made Blackman Elementary a special place to call home. It will always be special because all three of my children graduated from Blackman Elementary, so I always knew they were in good hands.
