When Blackman Elementary first opened, I remember the excitement of a fresh start. Staff from different schools came together, eager to build new relationships and create a strong school family. The new building was wonderful, but the people and the sense of community are what made it truly special.

They gave us time to come together as a staff family, enjoy a great breakfast, play Dirty Santa, and win classroom prizes through raffles. The fellowship, laughter, and sense of community made those celebrations something we all looked forward to each year.

What I remember most about Blackman Elementary when it first opened 25 years ago was the excitement of starting something completely new. I was teaching kindergarten, and staff members came together from several different schools to open Blackman. We were building not only a new school, but also a new school community. There was a strong sense of teamwork as everyone worked together to establish routines, create a positive culture, and start new traditions.

One of my favorites is our yearly High School Homecoming Parade. I love seeing the marching band, cheerleaders, and football players as they make their way through the school parking lot. It is especially meaningful to see so many former elementary students return and celebrate the school. Watching them grow and succeed reminds me of the lasting impact and strong sense of community that makes Blackman Elementary such a special place.

It has always felt like a second home, where I built lasting relationships, created many memories, and had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students every day.

Give yourself grace. No one becomes an expert in a new school or curriculum overnight. Focus first on building relationships with students, families, and other teachers. The rest will come. Don't be afraid to ask questions, don't try to do everything at once, and take care of yourself!

It will always be special because all three of my children graduated from Blackman Elementary, so I always knew they were in good hands.
